Week 15 : Manchester Marathon & Cathedral To Castle

What an epic few months it’s been for the Essington Harriers putting in some Long Sunday Rundays during the winter months in preparation for the Manchester Marathon & London Marathon next week.

All that hard work paid off with outstanding runs from the Marathon team, 9 runners doing their 1st in person marathon, 7 runners getting a marathon distance PB!

Along with the Marathon, we had two runners doing the Cathedral To Castle run, and the Saturday morning Parkrunning too.

With a lot of our runners either tapering or resting before the Manchester Marathon, we had fewer members running Parkrun this week.

Cathedral To Castle

The Rotary Cathedral to Castle 10 Mile Multi Terrain Run ā€“ or ā€˜Cathedral to Castleā€™ as it is affectionately known, is one of the most exciting urban and country road events in the UK. It is also aiming to be the largest charity fundraising running event in the Staffordshire region, with our chosen charities being local throughout Tamworth and Lichfield.

The course itself is fast and relatively flat making it suitable for all abilities ā€“ for beginners whose key objective is to complete the course, to more regular long-distance event runners, looking to beat their personal best time. It covers a 10 mile multi-terrain course from Lichfield Cathedral, passing through Hopwas Woods and finishing at Tamworth Castle where youā€™ll be greeted by an action-packed family fun day across the Castle Grounds.

Manchester Marathon

After Dave (did you know he run a marathon) Poynton and Holly Thomas completed the Virtual London Marathon last year, a buzz of FOMO spread around the club, and largely bullied and harrassed encouraged and spurred on by Phil Mew, several members started the training for Manchester Marathon 2023.

When out club Grand Prix was created, it incorporated the Manchester Marathon and so it’s set to be a fixture in the club calendar for the foreseeable future, though not everyone who ran the event is so keen to sign up again.

Unfortunately, a late bout of illness meant Phil could not take part this year.

It was an epic experience & what a club, not just yesterday but for the months of training, the route plans, support, advice and encouragement off every member along the way. Gary supporting around the route on the mic šŸŽ¤ Rachel and Glyn coming to support us. Itā€™s been an amazing journey topped off by a lap of honour yesterday and a šŸ…

And a special shout out to Philip Mew, gutted you were not able to make it today but you lead by example from the moment you ā€œmotivatedā€ people to sign up to the final training runsā€¦ being a marathoner is only a matter of time for you.
